Dr. Mary Täuber "photo gallery"
Germany`s early Tibetan dog breeds history is strongly connected to Dr. Mary Täuber. Born as Mary Wahik in the beginning of the 20th century in Estland, she became a medical doctor in 1926. Mary always has been a fancier of pure bred dogs, which these lovely photos of her and her dogs demonstrate. Interesting to compare her Chows to the ones we see nowadays.

It is very well-kown that Mary Täuber, owned Do-Khyis (Tibetan Mastiffs) and Sha-khyis (Tibetan hunting dog) in the 1930`s and 40`s. Whereas she never suceeded to breed Do-Khyis she obviously did with Sha-Khyis.

Her fascination for the Tibetan dogs should last a lifetime. In the early 1950`s she bred Tibetan Terriers. One of them was the famous Dschowo v. Potala shown here with the bitch Raga v. Potala in 1951.
In the 1960s she imported the Lhasa Apso male Verles Norbu, bred by Daphne Heskett-Williams from England and the bitch Krysants Lendzema, breeder Marianne Baurne, from Sweden. J. Alletzheuser imported Ting Ambrosia of Cheska in the late 1960`s. (Diaporama)
Dr. Täuber and Verles Norbu
Verles Norbu was poisened as a very young dog and there was only one litter by him out of Ting Ambrosia, which produced Dr. Täuber`s famous and influential stud dog Ting-la v. Boliba, an extraordinary example of true breed type. Ting-la was bred to Krysants Lendzema to produce Dschomo v. Potala, a small gold sable bitch, with a hard human hair-like coat. (Diaporama)
Dschomo was the dam of several v. Potala litters in the 1970s. In many cases she and her sire reproduced their own exquisite breed type, which was so strong, that it could still be seen for generations later on. Dschomo bred to her sire Ting-la produced Tschiri v. Potala, one of Gerti Brachsieck`s foundation bitches. And bred to Dolsa Marlo Matador she produced the beautiful Nal-du v. Potala. Bred to a Matador son, the famous Pag-mo v. d. Warwinckel, Dschomo produced Tschenrezi and Tik-ta-la v. Potala, which was also one of the last litters in this kennel.
Dr. Täuber died in 1979. Nal-du found a new home with me and my family. Tik-ta-la was placed with another breeder and had one litter bred to a Hamilton male, none of the puppies was kept for further breeding.
Nevertheless Mary Täuber`s charismatic personality, her knowledge about Tibet, and its dog breeds, her strong opinion about the responsibility of a breeder to study the fundamental virtues of these unique breeds, left us, who had the privilege to know her, with a strong spirit towards this fascinating goal for years to come.
(Diaporama)Quotation out of a speech she held on a KTR membership meeting in 1974:
“Show quality does not necessarily have anything to do with breeding quality.....A dog, which may appear “beautiful” and appealing does not necessarily need to be “typical”. And it is the most fatal mistake for the future development of a breed not to be able to differentiate between these two.“
